When Hobbies are Affected by Arthritis, How Fairfax Caregivers Can Help

June 25, 2012

senior activities affected by arthritisMy Nana Mae is a crafty woman.  By this I mean that she has always loved to create, sew and crochet.  With Christmas coming I’m sure that we will each be the recipients of her “famous” scarves and slippers.  Nana isn’t a follower of modern trends and fashion, but we love her gifts anyway.  They keep our necks warm and our feet toasty on chilly winter mornings.

Nana suffers from arthritis and I know that it makes handling her crochet hook more difficult that it used to be.  Because of this I’ve thought of the perfect Christmas gift for her!  A few months ago I saw an ad for “arthritis and carpal tunnel friendly crafting tools.” Perfect!

Lion Brand Yarn™ has an Ergonomic Crochet Hook Set for sale on their website that looks like it might be good for Nana.   Someone in Fairfax also told me that wrapping foam curlers or rubber bands around the hooks to thicken them can help.  You can also use pressure gloves or a heating pad to make your hands feel better.  There are actually a lot of options out there!

It must be good for Fairfax seniors to keep those arthritic joints moving, it probably keeps them looser.  I hope so!  I might have to make her a pre-Christmas gift basket full of pretty yarn and fancy new needles!

Do you have any suggestions to help my Nana cope with arthritis? Share your thoughts with us below or on our Caregiver Forum.
