According to a recent survey by Medco Health Solutions, more than 50 percent of seniors take five or more medications daily. Approximately 25 percent of the populations takes between 10-19 pills! At best, medication management can be described as a necessary companion to good health for seniors.
“I forgot to take my pills today!” Generally, 3 out of 5 seniors report that they sometimes forget to take their medications. Of the seniors taking 5 or more medications, more than 63 percent forget their daily doses.
“I didn’t get my medications refilled!” Seniors report that they have difficulty in refilling their prescriptions for a variety of reasons:
- Difficulty in driving to the neighborhood pharmacy.
- Difficulty in hearing or following the instructions on their remote pharmacy’s telephone system.
- Difficulty in paying the high cost of prescription drugs.
“I don’t know why I’m not feeling better!” Sometimes our seniors will alter their doses in order to cut corners and stretch their prescriptions. Also, care must be taken that our parents are not chewing or crushing non-chewable medications, which can alter the prescription. And, proper dosing is very important when taking liquid medications – make certain the liquid is taken with a measured cap or measured spoon.
It’s easy to mis-interpret a doctor’s instructions, mis-read a medication label or simply forget the myriad of daily prescriptions! We hope you’ll view our second video “How to Help Your Seniors Manage Medications” for more tips on handling medication challenges.
